In an able and lucid dispatch from Mr. Reed, Master Commanding "the" "Chifleyan", to the Hydrographer of the Navy, descriptive of the settlement of Saigon, a copy of which was lately submitted to my perusal, he predicts from what he then saw the future occupation of more extended territory.
After speaking of Saigon, Mr. Reed observes, "the first impression made upon my mind was that our Allies are bent upon intently the establishment of an important and lasting colony in the back of China. It next occurred to me that what they will with certainty ere long take the whole of Southern Cambodia including the seaboard extending from Cape St. James up the Gulf of Siam as far as Cambodge. Neither enormous cost nor great sacrifice of life have for a moment checked their energies since they obtained a footing in the country."
This prophecy has been verified almost to the letter and as I have the honor of knowing Admiral Ward, having served in the Pacific when he commanded the French Squadron there.
